Locations

A location is a city we check your Monitors from. You choose a Monitor’s locations under Locations when you create it, and you can change them later in its settings.

  • North America: New York, San Jose
  • Europe: Frankfurt, Helsinki
  • Asia: Singapore

The Locations list groups them the same way, and says how many are available right now.

A Monitor can have as many locations as your Plan allows:

No Monitor has more than 5 locations. In a Project’s settings, Default locations says how many a new Monitor starts with. Monitors you already have keep theirs.

Pick 1, 3 or 5 locations. When one location sees your Monitor fail, we ask the others, and the failure counts only when the majority of them agree, such as 2 of 3 locations. With an even number, the locations could split in half and settle nothing. How a failure is confirmed says what happens next.

Every location checks your Monitor on its own schedule, at the Monitor’s interval. They do not take turns. So a Monitor with 5 locations at an interval of 1 minute receives 5 requests in that time, one from each city.

That is what lets us tell a failure everywhere from a failure seen in one place. Interval and the traffic we send works out what that means for your logs and your rate limits.

Now and then one of our locations is out of service for a while. A Monitor with one location is then checked from another location until its own is back, so your Monitor is never left unwatched. You do not need to do anything. Its location badge is outlined, and says so when you point at it:

New York, probing from Frankfurt while New York is unavailable

A Monitor with more than one location has no stand-in: its other locations go on checking it.
