Microsoft Teams

A Teams Channel posts alerts as cards to one channel or chat in Microsoft Teams, through a workflow: Teams’ Workflows app gives you an address, and whatever is sent to it is posted where you chose. You make the workflow in Teams, then paste its URL into uup.

  1. In Teams, open Workflows. You find it under Apps, or in the menu of the channel alerts should post to.
  2. Pick the template Send webhook alerts to a channel. To post to a chat instead, pick Send webhook alerts to a chat.
  3. Give the workflow a name, such as “uup alerts”, and press Next.
  4. Choose the team and the channel, or the chat, and press Add workflow.
  5. Copy the URL Teams shows you.

The URL is long, on a host ending in environment.api.powerplatform.com. Anybody who has it can post to the channel, so keep it where you keep passwords.

Use the template as it comes. A workflow changed so that only people in your organization may start it turns our test card down.

A standard channel or a chat is the reliable choice. A workflow cannot always post to a private channel.

  1. In Project settings, open the Channels tab and press Add a Channel.
  2. Choose Teams, then Continue with Teams.
  3. Give the Channel a Name, such as the Teams channel’s own.
  4. Paste the URL into Webhook URL.
  5. Press Send test and add.

We send a test card first, and the dialog shows what it says. The Channel is added once Teams accepts it. When Teams turns it down, the dialog says why and nothing is saved: check the URL, then press Try again.

Teams accepts the card before the workflow posts it, so the dialog then asks Did the test card arrive in Teams? If it did not, there are two usual reasons:

  • The workflow’s owner left your organization, so it stopped running. Make the workflow again from your own account, then add a new Channel with its URL.
  • The channel is private, and the workflow could not post to it. Choose a standard channel or a chat.

Once it is added, add it to a Notification rule so alerts reach it. See Notification rules.

Microsoft has turned off the Office 365 connectors Teams once used for incoming webhooks, and has moved Workflows URLs to a new address. So the dialog refuses an Office 365 connector URL, and a Workflows URL from before the move, and says what to do instead: make the workflow as above, or open the workflow in Teams and copy its new URL.

A Teams Channel’s URL cannot be changed. To post somewhere else, make a workflow for it and add a new Channel with its URL.

If the workflow is deleted or turned off in Teams, Teams refuses our cards, and the Channel is turned off after a while. See When a Channel is turned off.
