The links in an alert

An alert carries up to three links: Acknowledge, Open in You Up?, and in an email, Stop these emails. This page says what each one does, and how long it works.

An alert about an Incident that is still open carries Acknowledge: a button in an email, a link in a chat message. It lets whoever reads the alert say “I am on it” without signing in.

Opening the link does nothing by itself. It shows a page with the Monitor, since when it has been down, and one Acknowledge button. Only pressing the button acknowledges. This is because some mail filters open every link in an email before a person reads it, and that must never acknowledge an outage.

Pressing Acknowledge tells your team that somebody is on it, and stops the Repeat alerts for this outage. You still hear when it ends. If somebody already acknowledged it, the page says so instead.

The page shows nothing else: no history, and no other Monitors. It cannot resolve the Incident or change anything else. Whoever holds the alert can use the link, so think before you forward an alert outside your team.

An alert about several Monitors that went down together carries one Acknowledge for all of them.

Open in You Up? opens the Monitor’s page in the dashboard, where you can read the whole Incident. You sign in first, as anywhere in the dashboard.

Every alert email ends with “Don’t want these emails?” and a Stop these emails link. Each address has its own link, so stopping is only ever for the person who uses it.

Opening the link stops nothing by itself. It shows a page with a Stop these emails button, and only pressing it stops the emails. After that, the address gets no more alert emails from your Organization, from any of its Channels. Adding the address to a Channel again does not change that: on the Channel, the address says it asked not to get these emails.

To get the emails again, open the same link and press Undo. Nobody else can undo it for the address.

Many mail apps show an unsubscribe button of their own beside an alert. It does the same as Stop these emails. Marking an alert email as spam stops the emails to that address too.

Link Works
Acknowledge While the Incident is open, and for 1 hour after it ends. After that, the page says the link has expired.
Open in You Up? Always, once you are signed in.
Stop these emails Always. The link never expires, so an email read long after it arrived can still be stopped, and the same link undoes it.
