Your first Monitor

This page walks you from signing up to the first result of your first Monitor, and to the first alert it sends you.

Open the sign-up page. Its title is Create your account. Press Continue with Google, or type your email address and a password and press Create account.

With an address and a password, Verify your email asks for the code we send to that address. Type it to open your account.

The next screen, Welcome to uup, asks four things once:

  • Your name, as you want it shown.
  • Organization, your company or team. It is what pays.
  • First Project, one product or website, such as acme.com. Your Monitors live in it.
  • Timezone, which your Status page and digests show times in.

Press Continue. You can rename the Organization and the Project later. How You Up? is organized says what holds what.

Your Project opens empty and says No Monitors yet. Press New Monitor.

  1. Choose what it should watch: Website, Port, Server or Heartbeat. You cannot change the type later. Choosing a Monitor type helps you pick.
  2. Press Continue. Give the Monitor a Name that tells you what it watches, since alerts use it, and fill in what to watch, such as the URL of a Website. Everything else starts filled in, including the interval and the Locations we check from, and you can leave it as it is.
  3. Press Create Monitor.

If a firewall or a bot filter guards what you watch, let our checks through first: see Allow our probe.

A new Monitor is checked at once, from every location you chose, and its page shows each answer as it arrives. Until all of them have answered, the page says Waiting for the first result from, followed by the locations still to answer, with one line for each location. Each line fills in with its result the moment it arrives, usually within a minute of pressing Create Monitor. You do not need to reload the page.

A Heartbeat Monitor waits for your own job to call us. Its page shows the URL to call and says Waiting for the first call until the first call arrives. See Heartbeat Monitors.

When your Monitor stops answering, we make sure the failure is real before we tell you. Once we have confirmed that the Monitor is down, an Incident opens and the alert goes out. How a failure is confirmed says how, and Incidents what opens and ends one.

Every new Monitor carries the Default rule, so the first alert arrives in two places:

  • the Inbox in the dashboard, under the bell at the top of the page. See Inbox.
  • an email to the address you signed up with, which is your Project’s Owner Email Channel. See Email.

When the Monitor answers again, you hear that it recovered, in the same two places. How notifications work says how to send alerts to other places, and to other people.

At the top of your first Project, the owner and admins see Getting started: the first things to set up. Its first step, Add your first Monitor, is what this page walked through. These are the other three:

  • Get alerts where you work: email already works, and a Channel such as Slack, Telegram or WhatsApp brings alerts to where your team already looks. See How notifications work, which links to the setup page of each Channel.
  • Set up your Status page: give the public page that shows your customers how your services are doing your own logo, colour and address. See Your Status page.
  • Invite your team: invite the people who share the on-call, each with a Role that says what they may do. See Invitations.
