Organizations and Projects

Your Organization is what pays. It holds your Plan, your billing and credits, and the people who work in it. It has exactly one owner.

A Project is one product or one website, such as acme.com. It holds its own Monitors, Channels, Notification rules, Inbox and Status page. A subdomain such as shop.acme.com is a Monitor inside the acme.com Project, not a Project of its own.

An Organization holds one or more Projects. Your Plan sets how many.

How uup is organized shows everything else a Project holds.

At the top of the sidebar, the Organization switcher sits above the Project switcher. Open either one and choose where to go. The dashboard opens that Project.

The Organization switcher lists every Organization you are a Member of. The Project switcher lists the Projects of the current Organization that you reach. Members and Roles says who reaches which Projects.

With one Organization and one Project, you rarely need either.

The owner and the admins can create a Project.

  1. Open the Project switcher and choose Create a Project.
  2. Give it a Name. It is shown in the switcher, in alerts and on its Status page.
  3. Choose its Timezone. It starts as your browser’s.
  4. Press Create Project.

The new Project opens. When your Plan has no room for another Project, the dialog says so. The owner can press See plans to choose a larger one; an admin asks the owner.

The owner and the admins can rename a Project. Open Project settings, change the Name under General, and press Save changes. The same screen sets the Project’s Timezone and the Default locations a new Monitor starts with.

Only the owner can delete a Project.

  1. Open Project settings.
  2. Under Delete this Project, press Delete Project.
  3. Type the Project’s name to confirm, and press Delete Project.

Its Monitors stop at once, and everything in it is deleted: every Monitor and its history, every Incident, the Status page, the Channels and Notification rules, and the Invitations to it. This cannot be undone.

The Members stay in the Organization and keep their other Projects. Someone who reached only this Project leaves the Organization.

Your Organization was made when you signed up, and you named it on the first screen. Only the owner can rename it: open Organization settings, change the Name, and press Save changes. The name is shown in the switcher and in the emails people get from it.

A person owns at most one Organization, and can be a Member of others by Invitation. When you belong to no Organization at all and own none, the dashboard offers Create an organization.

Only the owner can delete the Organization, with Delete organization in Organization settings. Deleting your account or Organization says what that erases.
