Members and Roles
The people in an Organization are its Members. Each Member has a Role and a set of Projects. The Role says what they may do. Their Projects say where they may do it.
You see everyone on the Members screen, under Organization in the sidebar. Each row shows the person’s Role, their Projects and when they joined.
The three Roles
Section titled “The three Roles”There are three Roles: owner, admin and member. A person has one Role in an Organization, and it is the same in every Project they reach.
- Owner: the person who pays. An Organization has exactly one owner, who reaches every Project. Only the owner changes the Plan, pays, deletes a Project or the Organization, and removes or demotes an admin. The owner cannot leave, be removed or be demoted.
- Admin: sets up the Projects they reach: Monitors, Checks, Channels, Notification rules and the Status page. An admin also creates Projects and invites people into the Projects they reach.
- Member: works with Monitors, Incidents and Channels in their Projects. A member can do the things that undo themselves, such as acknowledging an Incident or snoozing a Check, and changes no settings.

Project access
Section titled “Project access”The owner reaches every Project, and the Projects column says Every Project for them. Everyone else reaches the Projects they were invited into, and at least one.
To change which Projects someone reaches, open the menu at the end of their row and choose Change projects. An admin can change this only for a member, and only for the Projects the admin reaches. The member’s other Projects stay as they are.
A person left with no Projects is removed from the Organization.
Changing someone’s Role
Section titled “Changing someone’s Role”Only the owner changes a Role. Open the menu at the end of the person’s row, choose Change role, then Admin or Member. Nobody becomes the owner this way: see Transferring ownership.
Removing someone
Section titled “Removing someone”Open the menu at the end of the person’s row and choose Remove. They no longer reach the Organization’s Projects, and we email them to say so. The Monitors and Channels they added stay.
The owner can remove anyone else. An admin can remove a member who reaches one of the admin’s Projects, and never another admin.
To leave an Organization yourself, open Organization settings and press Leave organization. To come back, someone in it has to invite you again. The owner cannot leave: they transfer ownership first, or delete the Organization.
Transferring ownership
Section titled “Transferring ownership”The owner can hand the Organization to an admin. To make someone the owner who is a member now, make them an admin first.
- Open Organization settings.
- Under Transfer ownership, choose the admin.
- Press Transfer ownership, and confirm.
The new owner manages the Plan, billing and everyone in the Organization. You become an admin, and keep every Project you reach now. Only the new owner can give ownership back.
A person owns at most one Organization. When the admin you choose already owns one, the transfer is refused:
This person already owns another organization, and a person can own only one. Choose someone else.
How many people you can invite
Section titled “How many people you can invite”Your Plan sets how many Members the Organization can have besides the owner. A pending Invitation holds a place until it is accepted or runs out. Moving to a smaller Plan never removes anyone: it only stops new Invitations until there is room.
Invitations says how to invite someone.
