Slack

A Slack Channel posts alerts to one channel in your Slack workspace, through an incoming webhook: an address Slack gives you that posts to that channel. You make the webhook in Slack, then paste its URL into uup.

Making the webhook in Slack

Slack keeps incoming webhooks inside a Slack app. One app of your own is enough, and it can hold a webhook for each channel.

  1. Open your Slack apps, signed in to your workspace. The Open Slack apps link in the dashboard goes there too.
  2. Press Create New App, choose From scratch, give it a name such as “uup alerts”, pick your workspace, and press Create App. If you already have an app for this, open it instead.
  3. Under Features, open Incoming Webhooks and switch Activate Incoming Webhooks on.
  4. Press Add New Webhook, pick the channel alerts should post to, and press Allow.
  5. Back on Incoming Webhooks, copy the new Webhook URL.

The URL starts with https://hooks.slack.com/services/. Anybody who has it can post to the channel, so keep it where you keep passwords.

If your workspace lets only its admins add apps, Slack asks you to request the app first. A Slack admin of your workspace then approves it.

Adding it to uup

  1. In Project settings, open the Channels tab and press Add a Channel.
  2. Choose Slack, then Continue with Slack.
  3. Give the Channel a Name, such as the Slack channel’s own, “#ops”.
  4. Paste the URL into Webhook URL.
  5. Press Send test and add.

We post a test message to the channel first, and the dialog shows what it says. The Channel is added only once Slack accepts it. When Slack turns it down, the dialog says why and nothing is saved: check the URL, then press Try again.

Changing the channel

A Slack Channel’s URL cannot be changed. To post to another Slack channel, make a webhook for it and add a new Channel with its URL.

If the webhook is removed in Slack, or its channel is archived, Slack refuses our messages, and the Channel is turned off after a while. See When a Channel is turned off.
